Vintage-telephone-helloVietnam

Bạc Liêu is an outstanding province in the area of Cà Mau Peninsula, a large wetland at the end of the S-shaped country, Vietnam. However, it seems like apart from the local dwellers, foreign tourists have very little acknowledgment towards taking a Vietnam tour to this city. One of the achievements that Bạc Liêu has gained for itself is the sensational villa of a mandarin’s son that none of the Mekong citizens have ever heard of. Does your travel to Southern Vietnam highlights this? If not, you may think twice.

The building is now located at 13 Điện Biên Phủ Street, Ward 3, Bạc Liêu City, right next to the massive Bạc Liêu River. It was first constructed in 1919 when Trần Trinh Huy, the man character I was mentioning above, was reaching his early 20s.

The house was built based on a French architect’s designation and every single material was brought directly from France. After its inauguration, the villa was recorded to be the most magnificent building all over Mekong Delta at the time. Huy was infamous for his stories as a rich kid who led a loose life. He was a VIP customer to plenty of high-end hotels in Saigon, gambled away with all of his cash and even flew in a helicopter during his visits to his own rice paddies. Some rumors were made about his one outrageous paper note-burning story just for boiling eggs.

Over a century has passed, yet the edifice has still maintained its basic beauty. Each boulon was carved with an artistic letter P on top, which proved its origin from the splendid Paris. This is typically a spacious villa, which was once called as a “Big House” in the local term. Currently, the site is a segment of “Bạc Liêu Mandarin’s son hotel-restaurant complex” attracting thousands of visits. If you are thinking of signing up for a Vietnam private tour visiting Bạc Liêu, you will definitely have a chance to witness this gigantic manor.

Beyond, there is a restaurant placed right close by the villa, where you may find it hard to have a cup of coffee inside the master’s campus.

Moreover, the place has remained a spectacular room known as “the Master’s room”, which used to be owned by the Mandarin’s son himself, Trần Trinh Huy. Visitors are allowed to make a reservation to stay in the room. The thing is, it must be booked a month in advance. The bedroom I fully equipped with a king-sized double bed, air conditioner, television, and a desk. Other furnishings are all exquisite and subtle, especially a nostalgic telephone made in the French colonial age which is still able to function. Bee sauces in Ca Mau – A unique specialty of Vietnam

Bee-sauce-put-into-jar-for-sale-helloVietnam

To start my Vietnam culinary tour, I met up with Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh, living in U Minh District, who has more than 50 years of experience in making bee sauces. According to him, in addition to taking the honey from the beehive, the workers also have to cut off a part of beeswax. The cut part, then, will be rebuilt by the worker bee. If the worker cut or leave the whole beehive, the bee will find a new place to build their nest.

Local-people-take-only-a-part-of-the-nest-helloVietnam

Local people take only a part of the nest

Due to the exploitation in such a way, every time in the season, people will take the young bees from cut beehive to make salad or grill. Local people find that if they keep the way to cook like that, they will soon get bored. As a result, they try to make bee sauce – a unique dish of Vietnamese cuisine. Bee sauce is not difficult to make. After cutting a part of the beehive, people will cut it into pieces at medium size. Then workers put them into the pot and boiling with water. When boiling, the man must quickly mix the ingredients so that the beeswax melts. Then, they have to remove the young bee to drain. It depends on the number of young bees, you can choose the compatible container. Often people use a small glass to make bee sauce. When the bee is drained, local people will put them in that small glass with a little salt, then cover and bring it out to the sun. When the bees and salt are soaked, it is essential to mix the bees with the audiophile. You should expose the jar to the sun for 3 to 4 days until it has a light yellow color.

In my Vietnam food tour, I happen to know Mr. Phan Van Ri, owner of Hai Ngoi bee sauces production in U Minh Township. He said that his family sold about 1 ton of bee sauces each year at the price of VND 80,000 per kg. About half of which is sold on the Lunar New Year.  Although bee sauce is in the same type as others sauces in Vietnam, the time to reserve it is shorter. Normally, bee sauces are reserved within a week. However, if they are stored in the cooler of the refrigerator, their flavor can last for about 1 month.

You can make many dishes with bee sauce

Local people often cook and eat bee sauces in many different ways. When visiting U Minh, you will have the chance to enjoy the fresh bee sauces eating in local ways, which is very attractive. Local people will combine eating this sauces with pock, toad leaves, banana, pineapple, and some other wedges. The fatness of young bees combined with an aromatic smell, sour taste from vegetables and fruits make the dishes become one of the best dishes in Vietnam. It is a simple dish but it meets the criteria of taste. Just looking at it, you will get excited and feel the attractiveness of the dish. Ca Mau is a region that the number of poor people is still high. This is a dish you can eat alone with rice to make sure you are not hungry and have a good meal. If you want to enjoy the bee sauce properly, you will have to prepare more food such as young banana, chili, and fig leaves, bacon, fresh coconut milk, banana, cucumber, toad, ginger, cilantro. In addition, if you notice, you can find that the family here also change the taste by eating with mulberry leaves, charcoal grilled gunfire. Try to eat this dish in that way, you will enjoy the full good taste of bee sauce that is one of the most unique dishes in your Vietnam culinary tour.

On rainy days, when the local market is lack of shrimp, fish or there are guests come to play, the U Minh people get bee sauce as a specialty to treat their guest properly. Easy to use, delicious enough to show hospitality and no less formal, bee sauces is usually used on Ca Mau people daily life. On the trip to Ca Mau, besides having a jar of forest honey as the gift, you should also try bee sauces that are one of the must-eat dishes in Vietnam.

This venue is always my favorite thing to do in Vũng Tàu, and in spite of how many times I have returned to Vũng Tàu for the past few years, the museum is always a beloved place to have a deeper look back. Here is why you should put it in your most favored tailor-made private Vietnam tour too!

Who is Robert Taylor?

Taylor was initially a mechanical engineer in fact. He had been living with his huge love for collection ancient weapons right since the time he was a little boy. As a result, Taylor had been setting aside a good amount of income for the collection. Until 1996, Taylor decided to settle down in Vũng Tàu and nurtured his ambition of opening a worldwide arms museum. In April 2016, his museum was officially established and started welcoming the very first visitors. Over 50 years of seeking and collecting, Taylor’s dream is now obtaining over 2.500 artifacts including guns of various kinds, swords, army uniforms, crossbows and so on. Amongst the archive, 1.500 of them are over-200-year-old pistols and rifles which were found in England, Germany, America, Italia, The Netherlands, etc. Meanwhile, some of the rest were casted in silver and mosaic encrusted. The owner’s true story is one of the reasons why I favor the museum so much that I always need to advise my foreign friends to highlight it in their Vietnam tailor-made tours.

What can you observe throughout the building?

Right in the first room on the ground floor, you will be absolutely amazed at ancient real war materials from the Roman Empire, Ghengis Khan or Japanese Samurai.

Following a side stair to the upper floor, you will learn towards the Golden age of the phenomenon Napoleon Bonaparte. This middle age represents famous European warfare through the vivid display of royal cavalry uniforms. Other than that, iconic outfits of the Russian, Dutch, Bulgarian and German army are also exhibited.

Coming up next is a separate building located at the back of the campus where British royal armed uniforms are showcased. In addition, a large English horse replica is out for observation. In the rest of the rooms, various types of riffles, as well as a real artifact of British Queen’s handgun, will definitely give you a mind-blowing insight.

Last but not least, the last room of all is also my favorite across the whole site. This is where you can learn about specific types of weapons were used during the time of WWII as well as the Vietnam War. Not to mention, use of different outfits of Australian army divisions would also be introduced.

Why do I fancy this museum so much?

Its huge collection shown in a vivid and organized style is what I paid attention first. The owner’s private story was then revealed when I dived into some local articles made me admire him even more. Well-trained staff and a tasty coffee served at the back of the construction are other bonuses. Seeking a good site with a Vietnam private tour guide? This museum is for you!
