A day on the floating market

Cai-Rang-floating-market-helloVietnam1522393149

Visiting the floating market in the West is what makes me fascinated by the endless flower fields of the Northwest so I decided to take a Mekong Delta group tour with my friends.

On this occasion, if you have the opportunity to visit the West then you cannot miss the floating markets tour. Especially at Tet holiday, it’s the best time to travel Mekong Delta in particular and floating market in general.

I travel with my friends; therefore, we rent a boat with 500,000 VND. Of course, if you have the ability to bargain better than me, the cost can be reduced slightly. Pay an additional 10,000 VND if you would like to visit Can Tho bridge.

It will take you about 30 minutes to get to Cai Rang floating market – one of the crowded markets in the Mekong Delta. Certainly, you will also feel like overwhelmed like me when immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of the people of the river.

What time is suitable for traveling floating market?

Cai Rang floating market start very soon. At about 4 or 5 am, many boats gather to start preparing for the market. You should calculate the time to visit the floating market as soon as possible. From 6 to 7 am is when the market is the most crowded. The market will end at 8 or 9 am.

I got off the Ninh Kieu wharf to the floating market at 4:30, about 5 am I was here. At this time it was still a bit dark, the sun did not show up and the wind on the river is pretty comfortable but also made me sleepy

Fortunately, the trading sounds of the market made me overcome sleep and return to the "fun". Make sure you do not fall asleep because the floating market will be sad!

What's interesting about Cai Rang floating market?

Cai Rang floating market

Cai Rang floating market

There are many reasons why I would like to visit Cai Rang floating market after a short visit last year. The first was the bustling scenes here that made me feel attached.

The boats with full of cargo always appear in my memories. How strange is that? This is normal, you can only see people gathering markets and selling goods on the land only, and sales on boats like this is really weird in a positive way.

Each boat will sell a variety of items, from the freshest fruits of the West to the household items necessary for everyday life. Owners of boats will hang the item you sell on a pole – the people here called the "candy" so buyers can easily recognize.

Also, the dishes are also sold on the boat. I can not forget the feeling of sitting on a small boat floating on the water and enjoy the bowl of western burgers (15,000 VND). This can be said to be the most interesting experience of my trip.

Also, if you want to eat fresh fruit, you can ask the seller to pick it up, they are extremely friendly. The first time I came here, I was impressed by the hospitality of people in Southern Vietnam.

If you still haven’t visited Southern Vietnam, you definitely won’t experience the beauty of sceneries and people around there. Exploring new things is always the reason bring me to Cai Rang floating market, Can Tho.

Immerse with life on the water and the people in Southern Vietnam

The last reason and also the reason that I always attached here is the people of the river. I have heard a lot about the life of people here and now but they are happy and cheerful so I want to try it.

Until now I still do not forget the smile of the selling noodles woman. I told her about the way Westerners cook this dish. She told me her story when she and her family had lived floatingly on the water.

For some reason, the story from a stranger makes me feel so close to her. Perhaps it was because of her friendliness and enthusiasm that erased the distances of two unknown humans with different regions, different characters, etc.

Unfortunately, I did not come here on the Thuong Dien and Ha Dien festival in Can Tho in April or else I had the opportunity to visit the largest festival in the West. But who knows, next year at this festival I’ll take another Mekong Delta group tour to come back. Maybe next year the next floating market is Phong Dien.

And what about you, do you like my trip? I hope the following information is useful.

Sunrise on the top of a boat 1.	Nga Bay Floating Market - Hau Giang Province: Nga Bay Floating Market is sometimes referred to as Phung Hiep Floating Market. The market was formed back to the year of 1915. This is a famous market area of Hau Giang Province where the trading activities and business take place in bustle amongst the local citizens in the area of Mekong Delta. Beyond, nowadays, Nga Bay Floating Market has been a famed tourist attraction thanks to its uniqueness and interesting features. When visiting this floating market in Southern Vietnam, visitors will be able to witness the incredibly limitless expanses of fruits, fresh veggies and specific utensils of the delta, especially the reddish layer of rambutans, mangosteens and the holy smell of durians. What makes the market so special is because each boat would be selling one type of fruit only, and their creative marketing strategy is to use a long stick planted right at the front of their own boat, atop with one single fruit representing for their product. Colorful Nga bay Floating Market If you ever have a chance to come to this site, wallow yourselves in the folk chantey, taste a glass of strong coffee and admire the beauty of the Mekong traditional lady costume. 2.	Nga Nam Floating Market - Soc Trang Province: Just like Nga Bay Market, Nga Nam is the market situated at the junction of five separate rivers: Ca Mau, Vinh Quoi, Long My, Thanh Tri and Phung Hiep. Nga Nam Market was formed pretty long ago and also known as one of the most bustling markets in Mekong Delta. Unlike any other floating markets in the region, Nga Nam Floating Market starts its job extremely early in the morning at 3 am. The place gets even a little crowded at around 5 am. However, until 8 am, the market begins to disintegrate. Right from afar, people are still able to see the bamboo sticks planted at the front of each boat with a wide range of products for sale such as cabbages, tomatoes, potatoes, green onions, garlic and way many more. A special marketing strategy It is not too much to admit Nga Nam Floating Market gathers most of the specialties in the area of Mekong Delta altogether, from rice of all kinds, tropical fruits to seafood such as crabs, shrimps and fish. The market is just like any other regular market if there is not the twitter all over a part of the river from the local ladies, or even the unique floating eateries packed with the tastiest mom's cooks such as soup, rice noodles, fish noodles or coffee. Nga Nam Floating Market has still maintained the exclusive characteristic and the special vibe of an unaffected countryside in the Southern region of an Asian country like Vietnam. 3. Let’s take a virtual road trip around West Southern Vietnam through the lens of the most historic and ancient houses!

Huynh Thuy Le Ancient House

Huynh Thuy Le Ancient House

Huynh Thuy Le Ancient House

This lavishly decorated and beautifully ornate nineteenth-century courtyard house sits on the banks of the Tien River at 225A Nguyen Hue Street, Sa Dec Town, Dong Thap Province. Inside this “big villa” with “blue balustrades” and “tiers of terraces overlooking the Mekong” (the novel “L'Amant” (The Lover) of a well-known French writer Marguerite Duras) is a treasure trove of ancient objects including a couple of 19th century hanging lamps, a round marble table dating back to the 18th century, and a set of French table and chairs from the 17th-century reign of Louis XIV- all of which were acquired specifically for the house 120 years ago and have been there ever since.

In spite of being built more than 120 years ago, t his former residence of Huynh family now even can easily keep pace with the most elaborate of the mansions in the surrounding area. In the 77 years that Mr. Huynh Thuy Le lived there, he embarked on a sustained mission of expansion and elaboration, turning a wooden house in 1895 into a 'private palace of art'. The 300-square-meter house, with its busy facade combining Chinese and Classical elements, interior walls displaying photographs of both Le’s and Duras’ families, and a large ancestral altar lacquered in red and trimmed with gold, is jaw-dropping.

And just to add to the general excitement – it is allegedly one of the most famous ancient houses in Vietnam declared by the Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations as it witnessed the passionate love affair between Marguerite Duras and Huynh Thuy Le and formed a part of the movie “The Lover” of the French film director Jean Jacques Annaud.

Tran Van Hoa Ancient House – a house with 120 wooden pillars

Tran Van Hoa Ancient House

Tran Van Hoa Ancient House

Also known as the 100-wooden-pillar house, the complex of 120 wooden pillars covering a total area of nearly 900 square meters is a must-visit place when you travel to West Southern Vietnam.

Like most Hue-styled rương houses (a house built from wooden beams and pillars), the house was constructed of precious wood but what set it apart are its 120 wooden pillars, 68 of which are main pillars. This century-old house on the left bank of the Vam Co Dong River in Long Huu Dong Commune, Can Duoc District, the southern province of Long An appears to be a house made of rare wood like ebony, barian kingwood, and redwood, with its 120 pillars, including 68 round and 52 square pillars, set on a 0.9-meter stone foundation, and looks like how popular culture would imagine a wooden-age house.

Binh Thuy Ancient House

Binh Thuy Ancient House

Binh Thuy Ancient House

What used to be home for Duong family is now a famous playground for Vietnamese history lovers and architecture buffs on their South Vietnam group tour!

Binh Thuy Ancient House is a 19th-century French-styled house located at 26/1A Bui Huu Nghia Street in Binh Thuy ward, about 3.1 miles from downtown Can Tho. Having been deliberately preserved and promoted by descendants of the founder, the ancient house decorated in the style of Western Europe – with its ancient beauty along with its unique architecture – looks as elegant today as it did in 1870.

Looking for stately homes and ancient houses to visit in West Southern Vietnam? From the Nguyen Dynasty masterpiece to the unique architecture – a mixture of Southern Vietnamese, French and Chinese styles, this lovely region offers a wealth of over 100-year-old houses, perfect to wallow in on a South Vietnam group tour.
