Many group tours in Southern Vietnam currently offer a lot of tour packages towards the exploration in Mekong Delta with a huge range of selection and destinations. One of them is to visit the four biggest islets in the area of Tien Giang and Ben Tre Provinces.

The article below brings you a complete guideline about what to do as well as how to reach the Phoenix Islet, one of the four mentioned.

An overview of the Phoenix Islet

An overview of the Phoenix Islet

Where is the Phoenix Islet?

Phoenix Islet or Con Phung in Vietnamese is a natural islet situated in the middle of My Tho River, which is a part of the big Tien River. The Islet is approximately 12 kilometers by road and 25 kilometers by waterway away from Ben Tre downtown.

Phoenix Islet was officially named as Tan Vinh Islet and afterward changed to the islet of Coconut Religion, named after the founder of a now-discontinued religion in Southern Vietnam. In the early XX century, a local man named Nguyen Thanh Nam (1909-1990) settled down in the area of the Islet and founded a local religion widely expanding known as the Coconut Religion. During the process of construction for his religion shrine, the workers, with all of the sudden, caught sight of an ancient bowl on which an image of a phoenix was carved. The whole islet was later referred to as the Phoenix Islet as such.

At first, Phoenix Islet was simply a little island on a river with the coverage of 28 hectares. However, thanks to the beautification enriched by the silt from the river’s current years after years, the islet was then reaching the area of over 50 hectares. Phoenix Islet is recorded to belong a complex of four islets in total belonging to the branch of the Tien River mentioned above. Those four were named after four holiest animals in the Oriental belief, which are Dragon, Unicorn, Turtle, and Phoenix. The group of four is believed to bring good luck and wealth to the citizens of the East Asian countries.

How to have fun on the Phoenix Islet?

The Phoenix Islet is widely reputed amongst the local community as listed in the top must-see destinations in Mekong Delta. If you are more of a backpacker and down to explore everything on your own, the easiest way is to, if starting from Saigon, simply arrive in My Tho Boat Station and hire one for your group based on the group size. In case you have a scooter available, then head straight to cross Rach Mieu Bridge (connecting Tien Giang and Ben Tre Provinces), turn left to reach a local ferry for a drive to the Islet.

Simply having fun is what you can do on the site

Phoenix Islet is known to have a trendy eco-tourism site which is packed with a huge range of entertainment available for any types of visitors, such as fish-catching, exploring the ancient Southern-styled houses and enjoying the local authentic cuisine. The campus of the site is fully covered with greenish grass fields, featured the winding canals and delicate hand-made bonsai gardens, decorated with the long lines of palm coconuts. The newly updated entrance fee for an adult is VND 15.000 and free of charge for children under six, excluding other specific services inside.

Some of you might be wondering the reason why it takes up to, let’s say, a day to see just one site of the Islet. Frankly speaking, you are not just able to visit this eco-tourism site only but to own a great experience such as sneaking through the little canals on a small wooden boat, wearing the famed conic hats and try kayaking by yourselves, just like a true local in Mekong Delta.

Not to mention, one of the most interesting things waiting to be explored is to visit the relic left by Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam and get to learn about the “once-a-sensational-religion-recorded” Coconut Religion. The site is largely covering the area of 1500 square meters including the followings parts: his chancel yard, private living zone, and meditation zone. The final admiration can be taken into account is looking up the lively gaudy pillars carved with meandering dragons.

Last but not least, you will have a chance to visit a honeybee farm, a coconut candy factory and try picking fresh fruits hanging on the trees on your own. A break in between to enjoy a local folk singing performance is another relaxing recreation you can take for your selection.

In addition to the lotus fields, to fully enjoy the " pink lotus territory", visitors can go to Phuoc Kien Temple or Sen Temple. Here are some rare varieties of Southeast Asia.

Located southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, Tien Giang is a coastal province in the Mekong Delta with a coastline of about 32 kilometers. Tien Giang has relatively flat terrain. The land here is a neutral alluvial soil with less acidity. The characteristics of soil combined with climate characteristics of humid tropics have created favorable conditions for Tien Giang land to promote the development of agricultural fruit trees. It is not too exaggerated to say that Tien Giang is a "fruit kingdom" because there are more than 68 thousand hectares of land for fruit trees, which is the main source of fruit for the domestic market and international exports.
